Saint-François-d’Assise School Extension
Award of Excellence - Exposed or Decorative Concrete, 2022 ACI Excellence in Concrete Construction Awards
For this project, HTA used a cladding of 125-mm-thick, 7-meter-high concrete panels, laid simply against the foundation, with lateral supports on the upper floor and roof.
The panels act as a rainscreen, ensuring the extension's durability and ease of maintenance. Graphic Concrete® technology produces a rich texture, fine, clean patterns, and visual depth without any brittleness. A high-precision set retarder is added to a special membrane installed at the bottom of the formwork before pouring. A customized concrete mix is produced and used in panel form by BPDL. When the formwork is removed, the panels are washed to reveal the aggregate that creates the desired, long-lasting, permanent pattern. On site, experienced installers and crane operators ensure fast, efficient installation. An anti-graffiti treatment is finally applied to the panels, ensuring their durability for many years to come - essential for a school building.
Artist Shelley Miller created the motif that adorns the concrete exterior of the school, thanks to the Quebec government's “Politique d'intégration des arts à l'architecture et à l'environnement ”. This expansion project meets the School Service Centre's expectations in terms of creativity and innovation.
