Construction of Marie-Rollet Building at École des Monarques
Following the demolition of the existing school, construction began on the new Monarques elementary school, Édifice Marie-Rollet. Located in Montreal's Rosemont neighborhood, this new school will house 14 classrooms, a double gymnasium, and new teaching spaces, among other features.
The architectural concept is reflected in the textures and rhythm of the building, playing with the scales of its morphology. Where biology and architecture meet, the composition of the facades, with their offset vertical rectangles, is reminiscent of the scales of a wing seen under a microscope.
The facades will be made of brick and textured precast concrete, a technique that reveals a rich and nuanced material. As part of the Arts Integration Policy, artist Fanny Mesnard will create a work integrated into the concrete, displayed throughout the school.
The Monarch butterfly, whose morphology guided the architectural design, embodies resilience, fulfillment, and travel. This symbolism echoes the destiny of Marie Rollet, who crossed the Atlantic to settle in New France. Both become figures of a true epopee and adventure, mirroring the educational journey that students undertake each year at school.
