New Elementary School in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield.
The new school on Mathias Street is organized around a central courtyard, creating a dialogue with the adjacent Frédéric-Girard School. Like pieces of a puzzle, the two buildings break apart to create the courtyard in the interspace, forming an interlocking institutional complex that meets the city's emerging educational and community needs.
The spatial organization is articulated around a skylight that runs through the three floors like an atrium, bathing the heart of the school in natural light. The looping circulation around the atrium creates a fluid spatial continuity.
Collaborative spaces are located along the alleyway-corridors in front of the classrooms, allowing them to visually benefit from an enlarged space. This configuration encourages proximity between all classrooms and cultivates a sense of community on each floor.
